Were not the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park Mechanical Puppets? This would explain the poor creature effects, as CG still has ways to go before it can catch up. Jurassic Park looked real because because the puppets are real.
It is the same as with Yoda in the old Star Wars trilogy versus the new one.
